We shared the story during a morning assembly to the whole school and set our students with challenges to help them earn stamps. For P1-3, Mr Max read parts of the story with students asking them questions throughout – each correct answer = 1 stamp! For P4-6, Ms Tabby made a challenge sheet which involved a comprehension task and a speaking activity. Students were able to volunteer to complete the challenge sheet to earn stamps. Our students love learning these classic fairy tales and it provides an excellent opportunity to practise using English.

The students had to familiarise themselves with the words they have already learnt in their levels. All the students took part in the competition on the Kahoot app and the top 10 students were selected from each class. Our local teachers and NETs facilitated the competition in the classroom exceptionally well and the students showed great positivity and enthusiasm. Students received a small gift for their participation and outstanding effort, while the winner received a certificate and a prize. Many students were enthusiastic and eager to obtain more stamps so the response was very positive. It was also evident that students made good use of the language learnt from their general English lessons as they could ask our NET teachers such questions like: “What do you like to do in your spare time?” “How often do you exercise?” “What is your favourite juice?” “When do you wash your hands?” This activity allows our students to practise their speaking skills and encourage shy and quiet students to take more initiative to approach our NET teachers.
English Around the Corner - Cartoon Characters (October)2020-11-11
One of the ways that the English Around the Corner program tries to stimulate our students is by choosing interesting topics that might not appear in their textbooks, but are relevant to their every day lives. Our October theme, Cartoon Characters, turned out to be one of the most popular themes we have ever chosen. Whether reading comic books or watching cartoons on TV or YouTube, many of our students find a lot of enjoyment from these characters, and we enjoyed discussing their personalities, characteristics and abilities. Students volunteered to submit pictures and information of their favourite characters and also shared why they liked these characters. The theme was interesting, relevant and authentic in that each student was able to identify their favourites and remember specific episodes and storylines.
